Tours, Paths & Key West Rides

Late Breaking News!  January 10, 2009: Our Killer Map is Out!

We have just released the finest tabloid sized Bicycling Map of Key West that the island has ever seen and it’s yours for free when you rent or buy from Bike Rentals Key West.. ask about it!

There are currently two regularly run tours during the slower months of Summer in Key West. Call us directly for information. Bike Rentals Key West will officially launch their first Historic and Leisure Bike Tours in Old Town this coming February 1 (2009)... good for all ages. Reservations can be made online at that time. Until then, call anytime for more information.

We are the only bicycle rental company on the island that publishes it’s own in-house Biking Map and Guide. A copy is presented to every party that rents from us. Included is our local’s advice on how to stay safe while riding and keep your bike secure when you park, as well as the legalities of bicycling on the island. The professionally made map shows popular pedaling routes, streets that actually have dedicated bike lanes, what roads have biking and running paths and extra wide sidewalks along side them.

Download our Map/Guide here in .pdf format. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file.

Key West may only be about 2 x 4 miles in size but it has beautiful scenery to cruise tour.

Here are some of our suggestions for exploring on your bike; Quieter areas that may be safer for your little ones are marked K

Government Road, Little Hamaca Park

Well known by bird watchers worldwide as one of the prime spots to catch a glimpse of the Antillean Nighthawk, and locally as a great dog walking area, Government Rd is also a fairly quiet, mostly traffic-free area. Little Hamaca itself is a small Hardwood Hammock, Wetland and Botanical Nature Trail with paths and networked boardwalks. Because of the low hanging branches, you may want to lock the bikes up and walk through much of this park.

Key West Beaches

Smathers, Higgs and South Beach at the top of Duval Street is pretty much it for public access beaches on Key West. They’re all on the Atlantic (South) side of the island and all have at least wide sidewalks to get to them making them fair game for the bicyclist. Smathers and Higgs both have watersports concessions, beach chairs & volleyball courts.

Training & Exercising

On the island... the Smathers and Flagler Ave circuit is it. We are available for transporting you for highway training but BE CAREFUL.

Truman Annex, Fort Zachary Taylor

Easily Accessed via Southard Street or Front Street, Truman Annex is certainly one of the quietest, most lush neighborhoods on the island. Constructed in the late 80’s, as Key West’s first official gated community, it also serves as the gateway to the Westernmost entrance to Truman Annex Naval Air Station and Fort Zachary Taylor. Ft Zach is a State Park that requires a fee for entrance. Bring your swimming stuff as the park is one of the cleanest swimming beaches on the island.

Old Town Streets

Our personal favorites are Fleming, Southard and of course Angela Street that runs down the North end of the KW Cemetery. Be very careful on Southard and Fleming as they are narrow and traffic is known to really fly there.

Key West Cemetary

Another reasonably low-risk place for the little ones to join you is this small plot of land in the heart of Old Town Key West. It’s full of Key West History, make sure and bring one of Sharon Well’s “Walking and Biking Guides”
